How to Apply: Full Membership

Full Membership requires genealogical verification of your descent from one of the passengers from the Mayflower’s 1620 voyage. DNA evidence alone will not suffice. We use the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) to approve applications to the SMD(E). There is a great deal of information about joining the GSMD on their website (https://themayflowersociety.org). This will give you some ideas on how to start your research, and it may give you an indication of when it is time to start working with the SMD(E) Historian. If in doubt, please contact us! We accept transfers from other GSMD Societies. For people who are verifying their lineage for the first time, it will be necessary to make an application through the GSMD. This application will be sponsored by the SMD(E) Historian, and if it is approved, you will become a member of both the SMD(E) and the GSMD. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide all necessary documentary evidence, such as birth, marriage and death certificates, as advised by the SMD(E) Historian; every application requires at least a few of these items. Some early family lines may have already been proven, and this will help to reduce the number of new documents that have to be found; the Historian will inform you of your situation after consulting ‘The Silver Books’, a series of proven genealogies which usually cover the first five generations of each Mayflower family, and the GSMD database for more recent applications. In every case, it is vital that the applicant commits to participation in the (sometimes lengthy) process to gather proofs. Historians offer a significant amount of specialist work without charge, but they cannot access your family documents without your help, and no application will be complete without them. We do encourage applications from people with previously unproven lines, though the process of verification may take longer - we share your excitement in these challenges! Please read the APPLICATION PROCESS FOR FULL MEMBERSHIP. For further information please contact the SMD(E) Historian at: Mayflower.smde.historian@gmail.com

Application Process for Full Membership

Membership in the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, headquartered in Plymouth, Massachusetts, is managed through our 54 individual Member Societies located in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Europe, and Australia. A successful membership application ensures that your Mayflower lineage has been professionally documented for future generations and supports genealogical research and educational programs focused on the impact of the voyage of the Mayflower and her passengers in a historical context. The Society of Mayflower Descendants (Europe), or SMD(E), is a European community within the General Society. Each year we hold several online social events with a speaker or other activity, and one in-person visit to a European Mayflower site in the UK such as Dorking, Southampton, London, Plymouth, Scrooby, or Leiden in the Netherlands. Our Historian is happy to help potential full lineage members through the application process, which is comprised of several steps, as follows: 1) PRELIMINARY REVIEW You will receive a GDPR notice and consent form, needed for us to be able to exchange information, and a preliminary application form which will provide the Historian with your proposed lineage and other information needed to assist you and start your application file. Once you sign and return these documents to our Historian, your lineage will be compared with records on file at the Mayflower Society. If the validity of your earlier generations can be confirmed, our Historian will create a draft of your preliminary application and notify you of the documentation that is needed to complete your application. 2) COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTATION Collection of documentation from national, state, provincial, county, city and other offices and organizations is a time-consuming process that takes patience. Long form birth, marriage, and death certificates which name parents are required for all life events from about 1900 to the present, although these copies do not have to be certified. For events prior to 1900, other reasonable records may be accepted, depending on the strength of the source. Our Historian will complete the application for you, answer questions and assist you during your search, but you will be responsible for obtaining the documentation and the payment of any necessary documentation fees. 3) HISTORIAN APPROVAL AND APPLICATION FEE PAYMENT Once your documentation and application are complete to the satisfaction of our SMD(E) Historian, you will be asked for payment. Currently, the new application fee is $ 300 or £ 250 or € 288, depending on the location of your bank. This fee includes application processing and annual membership dues for your first year of membership. 4) VERIFICATION Your application will then go into a queue at the Mayflower Research Center in Plymouth to be later reviewed and verified by their professional genealogy staff. This process usually takes several months. 5) MEMBERSHIP When your application is successfully verified, then you will become a member of both the SMD(E) and GSMD, you will receive your membership numbers, an official membership certificate and a very warm welcome from us all! We can’t wait for you to join us! If you would like to start, please contact our Historian by email at: mayflower.smde.historian@gmail.com who will send you the GDPR privacy notice and consent forms, and the preliminary application form, step one on your journey to Mayflower Society membership. New Application fee: $ 300 or £ 250 or € 288 (includes application processing and annual membership dues for your first year of membership).
